Identifying Feelings

What is the “big idea” for this lesson?

  • Mindfulness means noticing and paying attention into the present moment.

  • All thoughts and feelings are okay, however some feelings can be bundled up or difficult to sort out.

  • Coping with feelings through sorting, labeling, and sharing your feelings can help you take care of yourself when you have strong emotions.

Reflection questions:

  1. What do your feeling faces look like? (Angry, Sad, Confused, Happy, or ?) Knowing all feelings are okay, what can you do to care for yourself when you are angry?

  2. What about when you are sad or confused?

  3. Bonus Questions: How do others in your home take care of their feelings? How do we help others that we care about take care of their feelings?

How Am I Feeling Activity

Practice noticing and naming your feelings by drawing out feeling expressions and writing the name of the feeling below it.

Brainstorm:

  • What am I feeling right now?

  • What would it look like as an expression on someone's face?

  • What are 3 other feelings I have felt lately? How do people show these feelings on their face?

Materials:

  • Paper

  • Pencil or pen and your favorite drawing supplies (markers, crayons, pencils, etc.)

  • Optional: small round object like a cup or bowl to trace

Directions:

  1. Draw 4 small circles on your paper. (You can use a bowl or cup to trace the circles.)

  2. Draw 4 different feelings or facial expressions inside the circles.

  3. Write the name of the feelings below the circles.
