Friendship and Social Connection
What is the “big idea” for this lesson?
Thinking about the qualities of a good friend helps us to be better friends.
Friends and family members are important for our resilience because we can talk to them about our feelings and they can help us remember our strengths.
Empathy is the ability to recognize what someone is feeling because you have had that emotion, too. It helps you imagine what they might be thinking and feeling.
Reflection questions:
What makes a good friend?
How are you feeling about social distancing?
How are you staying connected with friends while school is online?
Social Connection Bingo
This is an opportunity to think about how we can connect more with others while we’re all social distancing and learning online.
Brainstorm:
What are some ways I can connect with others during social distancing and online learning? What ways have I been using to connect with others that have been working? What ideas did I hear from my classmates or teachers during our Project Resilience lesson?
Who do I know that might be feeling lonely during this time? When have I felt lonely and who can I think of who might be in a similar situation and might be feeling lonely now? (Practice empathy.) How can I connect with them to let them know that they are not alone? What helps me feel more connected when I’m feeling lonely?
Materials:
Paper and pens/pencils/markers or a computer
Directions:
Fill in the blank bingo spaces (or make a list on another piece of paper) with your own ideas of how to connect with others.
